SRMC Earns National Award for Quality Care

Springfield, OH – For the second year in a row, Springfield Regional Medical Center has been recognized by the Premier healthcare alliance as a winner of the Premier Award for Quality (AFQ). Springfield Regional Medical Center is one of 27 winners out of more than 3,800 eligible hospitals nationwide.
“We are very proud to receive this recognition. The Premier Award for Quality is a clear reflection and recognition of the quality care that Springfield Regional Medical Center and Community Mercy Health Partners as a whole provides daily to our patients and residents at all our facilities throughout our region,” said Mark Wiener, President and CEO, Community Mercy Health Partners. “We could not achieve this success without our associate and physicians’ dedication to maintaining high standards of care and their commitment to our values of excellence and compassion in meeting the healthcare needs of this community.”
Terry Pope, Vice President, Chief Nursing Executive, Community Mercy Health Partners accepted the award at the 2008 Premier Annual Breakthroughs Conference & Exhibition, which was held June 10-13 in Nashville, Tenn.
“The Award for Quality differentiates its winners as industry leaders by recognizing clinical excellence in both quality of care and operational efficiency,” said Stephanie Alexander, senior vice president of Premier Healthcare Informatics. “Premier is pleased to honor this elite group of hospitals for the high quality of patient care they offer to improve the health of their communities.”
All acute care inpatient facilities in the United States that submitted data to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the CMS Hospital Compare project were considered for the AFQ. Using MedPar 2006 data, Quality and Efficiency Indexes were calculated for 62 disease groups and at the overall hospital level. Quality was measured by the incidence of three adverse outcomes: mortality, morbidity and complications, which are combined into a single Quality Index using the preference weightings from the Corporate Hospital Rating Project (CHRP). The efficiency index was generated using length of stay to proxy for resource utilization.
Acute care facilities attaining the top one (1) percent designation are identified as having scores in the top two quintiles for process of care and in 10 out of 62 disease groups and at the overall hospital level for quality and efficiency. Hospitals had measures for quality and efficiency that were equal to or exceeded expected outcomes.
Additionally, Springfield Regional Medical Center received high marks in Premier’s Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration project. The demonstration was designed to test new payment systems under Medicare that would improve the safety, quality and efficiency of care delivered in the nation’s hospitals. Springfield Regional Medical Center was one of 250 participating hospitals in 36 states which volunteered to report their quality data for the following five high-volume inpatient conditions using national measures of quality care: acute myocardial infarction (AMI/heart attack); coronary artery bypass graft; heart failure; pneumonia; hip and knee replacement. Springfield Regional Medical Center ranked in the top 50 percent of participants in the pneumonia and coronary artery bypass graft categories.
In 2007, Community Mercy Health Partners and Springfield Regional Medical Center were honored with the Premier Award for Quality. In 2006, Springfield Regional Medical Center earned a Premier Award for Quality for coronary bypass graft (CABG) surgery, led by cardiovascular surgeons, Dr. Surender Neravetla and Dr. Lofton Misick and the CMHP cardiac care team.
